Actively. Seeking. Thankfulness.

“Rejoice evermore.

Pray without ceasing.

In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Life’s hard. Days are mundane. People are energy zapping. Finances are frustrating. Health is iffy. Our houses are dated. Supper was bland. Kids are whiny. Gas is expensive. The weather is too hot/cold/snowy/rainy. The list goes on…

Isn’t this how we view most days of our life? There’s always something going wrong, someone on our nerves, and somewhere else we’d rather be.

But what if we CHOSE a heart of gratitude instead of a grumpy attitude?

What if we SOUGHT OUT reasons to be thankful rather than ungrateful?

That’s what I’m seeking to do.

A month or two back I started writing down things that God provided for us. Everything from hand-me-down clothes for the kids to fresh eggs family and friends gave us. I tried being pretty detailed in what I wrote and being observant to anything that was a blessing to us. And let me tell you that it’s amazing what you come up with to be grateful for when you’re actively looking for it! There have been so many times recently that God has provided for a need (often right in the nick of time!) that had I not been actively seeking to notice these blessings, I might have completely missed them.

Having a growing family + new land + planning to build + one income household = tight budget. There have been many times we’ve had to turn down buying or doing something simply because there wasn’t the finances available to do it. Doing that over and over and over again every single week can easily become a recipe for a discontented and frustrated heart. BUT. BUT!! Since starting my “Thankfulness Journal” it’s become so much easier to notice all the MULTITUDE of BLESSINGS that God has sent our way! I’m amazed at the thankfulness it’s produced in my heart to God and in a way, I feel like the more I’m thankful for the little things He’s provided (and actually take the time to verbally say “Thank You” to Him), the more He keeps providing all the little things we need!!

He has what I need.

Maybe He was simply waiting for me to acknowledge it. Hmm.

Now, having a thankful heart goes way beyond being grateful for material and monetary things. It’s an attitude that should penetrate all aspects of our lives. When the weather is too hot for your liking, be thankful it’s sunny. When dishes are piling high, be thankful you have food to eat every day. When you’re late for work, be thankful, there might have been a car accident that you missed.

Being thankful in EVERYTHING is something I feel like I’m just beginning to dip my toes in the water of. It’s definitely not easy and definitely something that takes God’s help to truly accomplish but, He did say that’s HIS WILL FOR US IN CHRIST JESUS!

So, I encourage you to take a piece of paper and begin writing down all the little and big things that God has provided for you. It can either be physical and monetary things like my list or everyday circumstances that you chose to be thankful for (or both!). Please share in the comments THREE things you are grateful to God for this week. I’ll start!

  1. A bunch of Pull-ups for Curly Top from a church member.
  2. Hand-me-down work jeans for Willis.
  3. A $15 coupon off to the local hardware store.

“Gratitude is riches, complaint is poverty.”
