Healthy Homemade Hot Chocolate

It’s that time of year when mornings are cold, leaves are brightly colored, and my favorite hoodie gets pulled out of the closet. Yeah, I know a lot of people say it, but Fall really is one of the best times of the year. I love to make Apple Crisp, warm Veggie Soup in the crockpot, and hanging up laundry on the line becomes enjoyable again (it’s definitely not as enjoyable in the middle of August heat!).

We’re planning a family camping trip this weekend and I spent all day making goodies to feed my forever hungry crew. Let’s see…Persimmon Pudding, Snickerdoodles, Granola Bars, Hamburgers, Veggie Soup….Oh, and Homemade Hot Chocolate!

I’m looking forward to sitting around the warm campfire Saturday morning sipping hot chocolate while Willis makes eggs, bacon, and sausage. Mmmm.

Here’s the recipe for Healthy Homemade Hot Chocolate for you to whip up for your family this Fall. Enjoy!

Healthy Homemade Hot Chocolate

In a medium saucepan add:

  • 1/3 cup water
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • 3 TBS pure maple syrup
  • ½ tsp  Stevia (I use NOW brand, might need adjusted according to brand)
  • 1/8 tsp salt

Heat to boiling.

Reduce heat to medium-low and add:

  • 3 cups milk (almond or regular)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1-2 TBS Collagen powder* (Optional)

Heat till warm.

*The collagen is totally optional but it does add a little bit of protein to the drink. If you’re enjoying the hot chocolate with a protein rich breakfast or snack, then the extra protein won’t be needed, but if you plan on drinking it alone then it’s good to have a little protein to help blunt the effects of sugar in the maple syrup.

Personally, I love using collagen as it’s wonderful for your skin, hair, nails, and muscles/joints. I used it daily when pregnant and attribute it to my much reduced back/hip pain by supporting the connective tissues. There are many good brands out there but I really like Great Lakes. It is almost completely flavorless and mixes well into drinks, smoothies, oatmeal, etc.
